the unforgiven II

a definitely middle eastern script

here is some critical analysis:

laura flanders is dumb. I base this involved observation on one thing she says in the very first minute of the video below, which pretty much renders the entire discussion pointless. also based on that one thing, I do not sympathize with anyone who is offended by anything of this sort (including myself), nor do I agree with people who say sacha baron cohen's performance is somehow analytical and "only for smart people to understand." once again a single fuck up is sufficient in order for me to lose all hope in humanity (for the day).

although richard kim does say one thing that is worth thinking about; that these movies are not critiquing homophobia or racism or whatever but tolerance.

Funny I was just telling someone yesterday how much I really have been liking GritTV more and more.

Seems like the only thing the film may have been successful in is satirizing how racist the white gay community is.

It's definitely really difficult to talk about this sort of humor intelligently without somehow falling into either "I totally support it and it deconstructs homophobia" or "This is horrible and offensive." I'm not advocating for a middle ground either, but I think there's something else going on besides either of those two things. Not sure exactly what though.

Please don't lose your faith in humanity yet...

This is actually the only GritTV video I have ever seen so that's my disclaimer :). I tend to get super angry over mishaps like those when she says "Borat was offensive because of its stereotyping of the Middle East." That just destroyed it for me.

This is just a thought, but insisting on talking about this sort of humor intelligently might be the problem here, I really think that's giving the creators too much credit. I also don't know what a middle ground would be, but I know I don't find it horrible and offensive (or, I mean, I definitely do see that it's offensive, but I think we will all survive from it) and I don't think it deconstructs much.

I still need to see the movie by the way :)

I love Sacha Baron Cohen. If you lived in the UK, and watched his regular shows, when he just started and nobody knew he was messing about; you would enjoy them, too. He was very funny. and very offensive. People who like Southpark would like Ali G. Similar mentality. a mentality of a 13 year old boy. Or me. :)
Have you heard, btw he was supposed to do a sketch at the Oscars? Dressed up as a female Avatar creature, knocked up by J. Cameron? They got too worried about J. C's feelings, so it got scrapped. what a shame, I say.
